Brunel was born with a cleft lip, and although her parents Armand and Solo were supportive, she was often teased by other kids. They called her "sima," or cleft, instead of her name. Her parents were worried about how this would affect Brunel in the future and were concerned about her health. After empty promises from a local hospital, they heard about Operation Smile on the radio and were thrilled to find out Brunel could receive a free surgery to give her a new smile and a new future.
