2018 ISLC INTEREST SURVEY FOR ADULTS

Thank you for your interest in serving as an adult chaperone at the 27th International Student Leadership Conference! #ISLC2018 will be hosted by University of Washington from July 16 to Sunday, July 22.

This conference is a wonderful opportunity for both students and adults alike! ISLC is organized and run by Operation Smile Student Programs staff, as well as 20 to 30 student team leaders and five adult volunteers who are members of our Student Programs Advisory Board. The cost of attending #ISLC2018 as an adult chaperone is the same fee as a student: $850 USD. Adult chaperones are also responsible for their own travel to and from the conference.

The role of the adult chaperone is to support the staff, team leaders and Advisory Board to ensure that the participants are safe and have an amazing experience. Although more than 85 percent of the participants at the ISLC are students, we still want to make sure that the adult participants also have a good time. Additionally, we expect your assistance in helping maintain a positive, safe, orderly atmosphere for all of the conference participants. To do so, we have established certain guidelines for the conference, which are outlined below. Keep in mind, Operation Smile attracts great students, but great students can sometimes make poor decisions.

THE BIG 5: Zero Tolerance

Violation of any of the BIG 5 will result in immediate action and Student Programs staff will get involved to further determine the disciplinary action.

Curfew
As an adult chaperone, each night you will help complete room checks immediately following 10:30 p.m. Curfew and report concerns to staff. This likely will mean adults will need to stay awake for a little bit longer to ensure all students are in their dorm room. All adult chaperones are required to stay on campus and in a dorm room for the duration of the conference.

Adult chaperone meetings
Each day we will hold a general meeting with adult participants and the Advisory Board members to discuss the days’ events, duties, schedule changes and challenges.

Session attendance Adults must attend speaker sessions and other activities during #ISLC2018. Hundreds of students attend the conference and, legally, we need one adult for every 10 participants at every event.

Team games/challenges
You will be asked to help facilitate the Team Games and Challenges. These duties will be explained further prior to the conference.

Teams
1. Each participant is assigned to a team. Get to know your team and enter into the spirit of the conference. As stated previously, you are expected to be visible and present, but the degree of participation in the team activities is up to you.

2. Teams will gather at their designated spot each morning. Please help your team leader make sure all students are present. Any illnesses or problems should be reported at that time.

3. You will have approximately 25 students assigned to you. Try to see them each morning to hedge any problems (i.e. homesickness, loneliness, mobile-phone withdrawal etc.).

We select adult chaperones based on several different criteria.

First, we like to have a balance of new ISLC adult chaperones and veteran ISLC adult chaperone volunteers.

Second, we like for our larger groups of international students to be accompanied by an adult chaperone from their country.

Most importantly, we want to make sure that our adult chaperones are good role models for our students and capable of fulfilling their role as an adult chaperone.

If you are selected, we will provide you with registration instructions and more details of the conference as it gets closer to time. Please let me know if you have any questions, and thank you for your support of Operation Smile and Student Programs!
