Joe Curran

Joe Curran usually makes people smile with his delicious food and artistic presentation of special events. Joe is the owner of 1703 Restaurant and Catering in Winston-Salem, which has been his home for the past 22 years. Joe is from Orlando, Florida, but moved to Winston-Salem after graduating from Johnson and Wales in Charleston, South Carolina.
Before opening 1703, Joe worked at Roaring Gap Club, in Roaring Gap, North Carolina, as Executive Chef. Prior to Working at Roaring Gap Club, Joe worked at various restaurants in Winston-Salem, including Noble's Grille and Village Tavern. In 2000, Joe and his wife Molly decided to take the entrepreneurial plunge and opened 1703, and they haven't looked back.

During his time in Winston-Salem, Joe has had the opportunity to meet many people in the philanthropic community. He has worked on events for the March of Dimes, Crisis Control Ministry, The Children's Law Center, Winston-Salem Symphony, Summit School, Sherwood Forest Elementary School and The Children's Home. Joe is an active member of the Advisory Board of Brenner Children's Hospital.

Joe and Molly have three sons, Joseph, Max and Nicholas. Joseph, 18, is a senior at Forsyth Country Day School, and is looking forward to college next year, where he will study communications. Max, 16, is a sophomore at Mount Tabor High School, where he is in the Hospitality and Sports Marketing Academy. Nicholas, 14, is in eighth grade at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, where he acts as treasurer on the student council.

I am honored to be asked to participate in Operation Smiles Dancing with the Stars this year. Seeing the smile on a child's face is a very basic and rewarding reaction to a good deed or humor. Growing up in a Latin family, dancing is a part of life. Memories of dancing with my sisters brings a smile to my face. It's the least I can do to help a child make happy, creating a smile.

About Operation Smile

Operation Smile is an international medical charity whose global network of thousands of credentialed medical volunteers from over 80 countries is committed to helping improve the health and lives of children from more than 60 countries. Since 1982, we've worked with local medical professionals, governments, hospitals and other NGOs to deliver the safest care to each of our patients, and have established care centers wherever possible to give children ongoing medical treatment.

Operation Smile continues to provide training and education for local medical professionals so they can provide care within their own communities and share their expertise. To date, we have provided more than 220,000 free surgeries for children born with cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities.
